Anggodo’s lawyers accuse prosecutors of violating client’s rights

Lawyers for businessman Anggodo Widjojo, who is standing trial for attempting to bribe Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputies to halt their investigation of his brother Anggoro Widjojo, complained Tuesday that KPK prosecutors had violated their client’s rights during the indictment hearing last week.

According to lawyer Riezkhie Marhaendra, the KPK prosecutors violated Anggodo’s right to appropriate health care in connection with his attendance at the first trial session.

“They assigned a KPK doctor to check on Anggodo’s health even though the doctor was not a neurologist,” he said. Anggodo attended the initial trial session last week despite the fact that he was complaining of the discomfort of a pinched nerve and a migraine.

Anggodo is currently on trial for his alleged bribery of two KPK deputies, Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto, as well as obstruction of the Corruption Court investigation of his brother Anggoro Widjojo, who is believed to have fled to Singapore.

Anggoro was allegedly involved in the illegal procurement of radio and communications equipment at the Forestry Ministry in 2007.

Riezkhie added that during the first trial session, the judges had forgotten to ask the critical question of whether Anggodo understood the indictment or not.

He described the indictment as an imposition on his client, saying that within the theory of Indonesian law, there was no such thing as bribery trial.

“One could ask law experts about that. The prosecutors seem to be using any available methods,” Riezkhie said. He added that Indonesian law recognized the principle of equality before the law.
